What is Public Relations?

Public relations, or PR is it usually called, is the managment of a flow of information between an individual, company or organization and the general public. This can include an organization or individual gaining exposure to their audiences using topics of public interest and news items that do not require direct payment.

The target of public relations for a company often is to convince the public, investors, partners, employees, and other stakeholders to maintain a certain point of view about it and the integrity of its products, or of political decisions. Common activities include speaking at conferences, winning industry awards, working with the press, and employee communication.

PR usually involves:

  • Planning, developing and carrying out PR strategies
  • Providing answers to the media and other organisations
  • Researching, writing and sending out media releases to the industry press
  • Collecting and analysing media coverage
  • Writing case studies, speeches, articles and annual reports
  • Producing publicity brochures, handouts, flyers, promotional videos, and photographs
  • Organising media conferences and exhibitions
  • Continuously updating the organisation's website
