Indians traveling abroad from Delhi Airport with gold and precious jewelry will soon be able to register those items with Customs for valuation before leaving the country so that they are not charged duty on their return.
Currently, travelers have to get their gold and jewelry appraised at the Gems and Jewellery appraisal counter in central Delhi, but that could soon change, reports The Economic Times.
Customs officials have been trying for the past year to have the bureau set up, and are now managing to progress the idea after the Delhi High Court demanded a reasoned decision on the issue within six months.
There are already counters at the airport to declare personal items such as watches, sunglasses and other expensive items being taken abroad by passengers and airline crew.
