The Government of South Africa paid tribute today to Eli Izhakoff, outgoing President of the World Diamond Council, for his significant role in establishing the Kimberley Process, at the 10th anniversary KP Intersessional Meeting taking place here.

The Diamond Manufacturers & Importers Association of America (DMIA) says it has continuously led the American diamond industry's campaigns to "address and eliminate reputational risks."

Its comments came in response to an article in JCK Magazine entitled The Diamond Industry's Sad Lack of Leadership, attacking the global industry's lack of activity on the issue.

Jose W. Fernandez, U.S. Department of State Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs, and the leading American official supervising U.S. government policy related to the Kimberley Process, is to be guest of honor at the May 5-6 Ninth Annual Meeting of the World Diamond Council, in Tel Aviv in May.

He will address the WDC Plenary Session on May 6.

Two Indian men, who were among a group of 15 Indians travelling in three cars, were accidentally killed by French soldiers in the Central African Republic (CAR).

The Indian nationals were believed to be in the country on diamond business.

The Russian Federation headed the Kimberley Process (KP) production figures in volume terms for the second year running in 2010, according to rough diamond production statistics published by the organization.

Russia produced 34.9 million carats valued at $2.38 billion, and in dollar terms was in second place behind Botswana with $2.59 billion raised from the sale of 22 million carats of rough.

The General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution introduced by outgoing U.S. Kimberley Process (KP) Chair Gillian Milovanovic on the role of the KP in helping eliminate the trade in conflict diamonds.

Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) Chair Gillian Milovanovic called on members of the diamond industry to rise to the challenge of supporting the "evolution" of the KPCS to ensure ongoing consumer confidence in her speech to the 35th World Diamond Congress in Mumbai. Noting the critical role the KPCS has played in curbing trade in conflict diamonds, she said the body had to build on those achievements and not simply stand still.
